God the Son: Jesus Christ Our Savior

Understanding Jesus Christ as the second person of the Trinity - fully God and fully man

God the Son — Jesus Christ

The second person of the Trinity — the eternal Son who became man to save the world

Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity, the eternal Son of God who entered human history to save humanity from sin. He is fully God and fully man — two complete natures united in one person (the hypostatic union). Through His perfect life, atoning death, and bodily resurrection, Jesus accomplished redemption and opened the way for us to know God the Father.

Core Identity

"The Word Made Flesh, Savior of the World, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords"

Fully God

Equal in nature, glory, and power with the Father and Spirit

Fully Man

Born of Mary, lived, suffered, died — truly and completely human

One Person

Two natures, one undivided person — the mystery of the Incarnation

The Incarnation: God Became Man

The Word who was with God and was God took on human flesh and dwelt among us

John 1:14

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth."

God entered human history — born of the Virgin Mary, lived among us, died for us, and rose again. This is the miracle at the centre of everything.

Fully God

Eternal Existence

"Before Abraham was born, I am!"

John 8:58

Creator of All Things

"Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made."

John 1:3

Worshiped as God

"Let all God's angels worship him."

Hebrews 1:6

Authority to Forgive Sins

"Son, your sins are forgiven." (Only God can forgive sins.)

Mark 2:5, 7

Fully Man

Born of a Woman

"Born of a woman, born under the law."

Galatians 4:4

Experienced Hunger

"After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry."

Matthew 4:2

Felt Deep Emotion

"Jesus wept." — The shortest verse in Scripture.

John 11:35

Died Physically

"Jesus...gave up his spirit."

Matthew 27:50

The Hypostatic Union

This theological term describes the union of Christ's two natures — divine and human — in one undivided person. He did not cease to be God when He became man, nor is He half-God and half-man. He is fully both, perfectly and mysteriously united. The Council of Chalcedon (AD 451) affirmed: "one and the same Christ, Son, Lord, Only-begotten, acknowledged in two natures, without confusion, without change, without division, without separation."

The Mission of Jesus Christ

Why the eternal Son of God entered human history

1

To Reveal the Father

John 14:9

"Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father."

Jesus came to show us exactly what God is like. Through His words, compassion, actions, and character, we see the heart of the Father displayed with perfect clarity. "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son... has made him known" (John 1:18).

2

To Provide Salvation

Luke 19:10

"For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."

Jesus's primary mission was redemption. He came to die as a substitute for sinners, bearing the penalty we deserved — so that those who trust in Him would receive forgiveness, righteousness, and eternal life.

3

To Defeat Sin and Death

1 Corinthians 15:57

"But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Through His resurrection, Jesus definitively conquered sin, death, and the power of the enemy. "He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him" (Colossians 2:15).

4

To Reconcile Us to God

2 Corinthians 5:18-19

"God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people's sins against them."

Sin created an infinite barrier between humanity and God. Jesus's work on the cross fully removes that barrier — restoring peace, access, and relationship with the Father for all who believe (Romans 5:1).

The Four Phases of Salvation

His Life

Perfect obedience credited to our account

His Death

Our sin and penalty fully borne by Him

His Resurrection

Death conquered; our justification confirmed

His Ascension

Now interceding for us at the right hand of God

The Threefold Office of Christ

Jesus fulfills three roles that Israel's anointed servants held separately — He alone holds all three perfectly

1

Prophet

Jesus speaks God's Word to humanity — the ultimate Prophet who is Himself the Word of God made flesh

  • Teaches truth about God and His kingdom
  • Reveals God's will and character to the world
  • Continues to speak through His Word and Spirit

Deuteronomy 18:15; John 1:1, 18

2

Priest

Jesus represents us before God — both as the once-for-all sacrifice and as our perpetual heavenly intercessor

  • Offered Himself as the perfect, final sacrifice
  • Mediates between God and humanity
  • Lives forever to intercede for those who come to God through Him

Hebrews 4:14-16; 7:25; 9:11-12

3

King

Jesus rules and reigns forever — given all authority in heaven and on earth by the Father

  • Reigns over all creation and all nations
  • Protects and shepherds His people
  • Will return visibly to consummate His kingdom

Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:20-22; Revelation 19:16

The Resurrection: Victory Over Death

The cornerstone of Christian faith — without it, everything else falls

1 Corinthians 15:20-22

"But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive."

The resurrection is not a metaphor — it is a historical event that changes everything. Paul says: "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins" (1 Corinthians 15:17). But He has been raised.

What the Resurrection Proves

Jesus is truly God — death had no claim on Him (Romans 1:4)
His sacrifice was accepted by the Father (Hebrews 9:12)
Death and sin have been definitively defeated (1 Corinthians 15:54-55)
Believers will also be raised bodily from the dead (1 Thessalonians 4:14)

Where Is Jesus Now?

Ascended bodily to heaven in glory (Acts 1:9-11)
Seated at the Father's right hand in authority (Hebrews 1:3)
Interceding for believers always (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25)
Will return visibly and bodily to judge and reign (Acts 1:11)

The Ascension and Second Coming

Forty days after His resurrection, Jesus ascended bodily to heaven (Acts 1:9). Two angels declared to the watching disciples: "This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven" (Acts 1:11). The risen, ascended Christ will return — visibly, bodily, and in glory — to complete His work and reign forever (Revelation 11:15).

Lord of All — Past, Present, and Future

Jesus Christ is not merely a historical figure or a moral teacher — He is the eternal Son of God who holds all things together, in whom the fullness of God dwells bodily, and through whom all things will be brought to their consummation.

"He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

Colossians 1:15-17

"Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father." (Philippians 2:9-11)
