Discovering the person and work of the Holy Spirit in the life of believers

God the Holy Spirit

The third person of the Trinity — fully God, active in the world, dwelling within every believer

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, fully God and equal with the Father and the Son. He is not merely a force or impersonal influence, but a divine person with intellect, emotions, and will. The Holy Spirit actively works in the world today — convicting people of sin, regenerating believers, dwelling within us, and empowering us for service and godly living.

Core Identity

"The Helper, Comforter, Spirit of Truth, and Seal of Our Salvation"

Fully God

Equal in nature with the Father and Son — not a lesser deity

A Person

Has intellect, emotions, and will — not an impersonal force

Within You

Indwells every believer from the moment of salvation (1 Cor 6:19)

The Holy Spirit is a Person, Not a Force

Scripture consistently refers to the Spirit as "He" — with mind, emotions, and will

John 14:16-17

"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

Jesus refers to the Spirit as "him" and "another advocate" — the same Greek word (parakletos) used of Jesus Himself. The Spirit is not a lesser force; He is another divine person of the same kind as the Son.

He Has a Mind

The Spirit thinks, reasons, and knows all things — including the deep things of God.

1 Corinthians 2:10

"The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God."

He Has Emotions

The Spirit can be grieved — meaning He feels and responds to our actions with genuine care.

Ephesians 4:30

"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption."

He Has a Will

The Spirit makes sovereign decisions about how and to whom He distributes spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:11

"He distributes them to each one, just as he determines."

The Work of the Holy Spirit

Eight distinct works the Spirit performs in and through the lives of believers

1

Convicts of Sin

The Spirit reveals our need for salvation and brings awareness of sin, righteousness, and coming judgment. This conviction is the first step toward repentance and faith.

John 16:8

"When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment."

2

Regenerates — Gives New Birth

The Spirit brings us from spiritual death to spiritual life. This is the miracle of being "born again." Without this sovereign work, no one enters the kingdom of God.

John 3:5-6

"No one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit."

3

Indwells Believers

Every believer has the Holy Spirit living within them from the moment of salvation — not merely alongside, but within. Our bodies are His temple.

1 Corinthians 6:19

"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?"

4

Seals and Guarantees Our Inheritance

The Spirit is God's mark of ownership on believers and His down-payment — the deposit guaranteeing everything promised to those who trust in Christ.

Ephesians 1:13-14

"Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession."

5

Guides and Teaches

The Spirit illuminates Scripture, reveals truth, and guides believers in wisdom and decision-making. He does not speak on His own but glorifies Christ.

John 16:13

"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears."

6

Empowers for Service and Witness

The Spirit gives power for witness, ministry, and effective Christian living. Jesus told His disciples to wait for this power before going out.

Acts 1:8

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

7

Intercedes in Prayer

When we don't know how to pray or lack the words, the Spirit intercedes for us according to God's will — with intercessions too deep for human language.

Romans 8:26-27

"The Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans."

8

Produces Spiritual Fruit

The Spirit transforms our character from the inside out — producing nine qualities in every growing believer that reflect the character of Jesus Christ.

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

Biblical Symbols of the Holy Spirit

Scripture uses vivid images to help us understand the Spirit's nature and work

Dove

Gentleness, purity, and peace — descended on Jesus at His baptism as a visible sign of the Spirit's anointing

Matthew 3:16

Fire

Purification, God's holy consuming presence, and Spirit-empowered witness — appeared on Pentecost

Acts 2:3-4

Wind

Sovereign, invisible power — "blows where it will"; its effects are seen but its movements cannot be controlled

John 3:8; Acts 2:2

Water

Cleansing, refreshing, and life-giving — "rivers of living water" flowing from within the believer

John 7:38-39

Oil

Anointing and consecration — sets apart for God's service; the Spirit's anointing teaches believers all things

1 John 2:20, 27

The Fruit of the Spirit

Nine qualities the Spirit produces in every believer who walks in step with Him

Galatians 5:22-23

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."

These nine characteristics are the supernatural result of the Spirit's work in a believer's life — evidence of spiritual maturity and growing Christ-likeness.

Love

Unconditional, sacrificial love for God and others — the root from which all other fruit grows (1 Corinthians 13)

Joy

Deep gladness rooted in God's promises and character, not in changing circumstances

Peace

Inner wholeness and tranquility that comes from trusting God completely — shalom

Patience

Long-suffering endurance with difficult circumstances and difficult people

Kindness

Active goodwill and tender concern expressed in practical, helpful action toward others

Goodness

Moral excellence and integrity — doing what is right in God's sight consistently and wholeheartedly

Faithfulness

Reliability, loyalty, and steadfastness in following through on commitments to God and others

Gentleness

Meekness — strength under control; power submitted to God, expressed with humility toward others

Self-Control

Spirit-enabled mastery over desires and impulses; discipline in thought, word, and action

Notice: Fruit, Not Fruits (Singular)

Galatians 5:22 uses the singular "fruit," not "fruits." This signals that these nine qualities form a unified package — not a spiritual buffet where we pick some and leave others. All nine should increasingly be present in every Spirit-filled believer's life as we grow in Christ-likeness.

The Gifts of the Spirit

Supernatural abilities distributed by the Spirit to equip believers for ministry

1 Corinthians 12:4-7

"There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good."

The Spirit sovereignly distributes gifts to believers for the purpose of building up the Church and advancing God's kingdom — not for personal prestige.

Gift and Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Being Filled with the Holy Spirit

A command, not a suggestion — God's will for every believer

Ephesians 5:18

"Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit."

"Be filled" is a present passive plural imperative in Greek — ongoing, continuous, and commanded for all believers. Being filled with the Spirit is not a one-time experience but a lifestyle of daily surrendering to His control.

How to Be Filled

1

Confess and Repent of Sin

Sin grieves the Spirit and hinders His work in us (Ephesians 4:30)

2

Surrender Control

Yield every area of life to God's authority as a living sacrifice (Romans 12:1)

3

Ask by Faith

God promises to give the Spirit to those who ask Him (Luke 11:13)

4

Walk in Obedience

Continue following the Spirit's leading, step by step, every day (Galatians 5:16, 25)

Evidence of Being Filled

Growing Christ-likeness and spiritual fruit (Galatians 5:22-23)
Power to witness boldly and effectively (Acts 4:31)
Deep love for God's Word and prayer (Psalm 119:97)
Joyful worship and gratitude in all circumstances (Ephesians 5:19-20)
Victory over sinful patterns and desires (Romans 8:13)
Effective use of spiritual gifts to build up the Church (1 Corinthians 12:7)
Unity and genuine love with other believers (Ephesians 4:3)

Don't Grieve or Quench the Spirit

Don't Grieve the Spirit (Ephesians 4:30)

We grieve (sadden) the Spirit through sin — especially relational sins:

Bitterness, rage, and uncontrolled anger
Harsh words, slander, and malicious speech
Malice and ill-will toward others
Unforgiveness and a hardened heart toward God

Don't Quench the Spirit (1 Thessalonians 5:19)

We quench (suppress) the Spirit by resisting His movements:

Ignoring the Spirit's promptings and convictions
Resisting His conviction about sin in our lives
Refusing to use or develop spiritual gifts
Suppressing worship, prayer, or Spirit-led witness

God Living Within You

The Holy Spirit is not a distant resource or a force to be harnessed — He is God Himself dwelling within every believer. He is your Helper, Teacher, Comforter, and Guide. Surrender to His control daily and watch Him transform your life from the inside out.

"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

John 14:26-27

"Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit." (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)
