God the Father: Creator and Sustainer

Exploring the nature, attributes, and role of God the Father in Scripture

God the Father

The first person of the Trinity — Creator, Sovereign, and loving heavenly Father

God the Father is the first person of the Trinity, the Creator of heaven and earth, and the eternal source of all authority, wisdom, and love. He sent His Son to redeem the world and pours out His Spirit on all who believe. The title "Father" reveals His intimate relationship with His children and His loving care for all of creation.

Core Identity

"The Eternal Father, Source of All Life, Sovereign Creator, and Loving Provider"

Creator

He made all things by the word of His power (Genesis 1:1)

Sovereign

He rules over all creation with wisdom and justice (Daniel 4:34-35)

Father

He adopts believers as His children through Jesus Christ (John 1:12)

Attributes of God the Father

The essential characteristics that define who God is — not things He does, but who He is by nature

Omnipotent

All-powerful. Nothing is impossible for Him. He acts according to His perfect will throughout all creation and history.

Jeremiah 32:17

"Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you."

Omniscient

All-knowing. He has perfect and complete knowledge of all things — past, present, future, and even the secrets of every heart.

1 John 3:20

"God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything."

Omnipresent

Ever-present. He is everywhere at all times, never distant from His creation. There is no place where He is absent.

Psalm 139:7-8

"Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there."

Eternal

Without beginning or end. He exists outside of time — He always was, always is, and forever will be. He is the "I AM" (Exodus 3:14).

Psalm 90:2

"Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God."

Holy

Perfectly pure and set apart from all sin and evil. His holiness is not merely moral perfection — it is His utter uniqueness and transcendence.

Isaiah 6:3

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."

Loving

Perfect in love — not as one characteristic among many, but as the very definition of His nature. God does not merely have love; God is love.

1 John 4:8

"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

God the Father: Creator of All

Everything that exists came into being through His word and for His glory

Genesis 1:1

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

The Father initiated creation by His sovereign will and creative word. He spoke, and what did not exist came into existence. "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible" (Hebrews 11:3).

Physical Creation

The heavens, earth, seas, mountains, and all visible matter — spoken into existence by His word (Psalm 33:6)

Humanity

Created in His image (imago Dei) to reflect His glory and enjoy relationship with Him (Genesis 1:26-27)

Spiritual Realm

Angels, heavenly hosts, and the unseen spiritual dimensions (Colossians 1:16; Nehemiah 9:6)

The Father Still Sustains Creation

The Father's creative work did not end at Genesis 1. He continues to sustain all things by His power moment by moment. The Son "upholds all things by his powerful word" (Hebrews 1:3) by the Father's authority. Jesus taught that the Father still works: "My Father is always at his work to this very day" (John 5:17).

Colossians 1:17

"He is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

The Father's Unfailing Love

Three profound expressions of how God the Father demonstrates His love for us

1

He Gave His Son

John 3:16

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

The ultimate demonstration of the Father's love — He sent His beloved Son into the world to bear our sin and die in our place. This gift cost Him everything.

2

He Adopts Us as Children

Ephesians 1:5

"He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will."

Through Christ, we are not merely forgiven strangers — we become God's own children with the full rights and privileges of sonship. We can cry "Abba, Father!" with confidence (Romans 8:15).

3

He Gives Good Gifts

James 1:17

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."

The Father is the generous and consistent giver of all good things — spiritual blessings, daily provisions, wisdom, and eternal life. His generosity never wavers, never diminishes.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)

Jesus's most vivid portrait of the Father's love: a father who runs to meet his returning wayward child, throws his arms around him, and celebrates his return. This is not earned — it is freely, lavishly given. "While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him" (Luke 15:20).

How to Relate to God the Father

Access to the Father is through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Spirit

Through Prayer

Matthew 6:9

"This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven...'"

Jesus taught us to address God as Father. We can come to Him with confidence, calling Him "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15).

  • Praise Him for who He is — His character and attributes
  • Thank Him for His blessings and faithfulness
  • Present your needs to Him with confidence
  • Seek His will and submit to His guidance

Through Jesus Christ

John 14:6

"I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Access to the Father comes through Jesus Christ, who is both our Savior and our mediator (1 Timothy 2:5).

  • Jesus reveals the Father to us — "Whoever has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:9)
  • Through Jesus's death, we are reconciled to the Father (Romans 5:10)
  • Through Jesus, we receive full adoption as children of God
  • In Jesus's name, we approach the Father in prayer with boldness (Hebrews 4:16)

Knowing the Father Through Jesus

Philip asked Jesus, "Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us." Jesus replied: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father" (John 14:8-9). Jesus is the perfect revelation of the Father — His character, His love, His will, and His heart are displayed in the life of the Son.

Revelation 1:8

Ancient of Days

Daniel 7:9

Psalm 83:18

2 Corinthians 1:3

The Father Who Runs Toward Us

God the Father is not distant, cold, or indifferent. He is the Father who "sees" His returning child "while he was still a long way off" and runs to him (Luke 15:20). He is the Father whose love is so staggering that John can only marvel at it:

"How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!"

1 John 3:1

To know God the Father is the greatest privilege a human being can have. Jesus said: "This is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent" (John 17:3). Eternal life is not merely endless duration — it is knowing the Father, through the Son, by the Spirit.
